Rethinking Surgical Education
What happens when surgical education actually helps surgeons flourish?
The Good Surgeon program at Duke University School of Medicine reimagines postgraduate surgical education by helping residents and faculty cultivate the character, purpose, and relationships needed to flourish in surgical practice. Through a yearlong series of small-group dinners and retreats, participants draw on narrative medicine, the humanities, and the arts to reflect on questions of identity, patienthood, failure, brokenness, and the meaning of good surgical care. By creating a supportive community grounded in friendship, honest dialogue, and mutual accountability, the program complements technical training and encourages surgeons to become not only highly skilled clinicians, but also thoughtful, compassionate professionals who can sustain their calling over time.
