
The Trent Center's Humanities in Medicine lecture series brings scholars from disciplines including history, literature, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, religion and more to address issues relevant to clinical care.
For Fall 2025, speakers in this series will be exploring Planetary Health and Narrative Medicine. Register for in-person or online. A light lunch is available for inperson registrants. All lectures are free and available to Duke faculty, students, staff, and the wider community.
SEPTEMBER: Register for "20 Years Later: What have we learned from Hurricane Katrina?" which will take place Wednesday, September 10th from noon-1pm at Duke Hospital North Lecture Hall 2003 with Cassandra Davis, PhD.
OCTOBER: Register to hear Jessica Castner, PhD, RN-BC, a distinguished expert on nursing and health policy who has embarked on a yearlong term as Duke University’s third Executive Climate Leader in Residence. Her lecture: "Do True: Boundary Spanning to Impact in Climate and Health" will be on Wednesday, October 8th, also from noon-1pm at DHN 2003.
NOVEMBER: Register to hear "Caring for Our Patients, Our Students, Our Colleagues, Ourselves: The Power of Narrative" with Hedy Wald, PhD. Dr. Wald is a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine in the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and leads the Lancet Commission on Medicine, Nazism, and the Holocaust. This lecture will take place on Tuesday, November 11, noon-1pm at the Great Hall, Trent Semans Center.
DECEMBER: Register to hear poet and Duke surgical resident Joey Lew, MD, MFA who will present "Poetic Survival: Painting the Fire as it Burns Us" on Wednesday, December 3, noon-1pm at DHN 2003.
