Faculty Community of Practice

The Trent Center is developing a Faculty Community of Practice that brings together faculty from the School of Medicine and Trinity College around a shared commitment to character formation in higher education. Through sustained conversation, shared readings, and collaborative course development, faculty deepen their understanding of character and virtue while developing practical approaches for integrating character formation into their teaching and mentoring. Together, faculty create new courses, mentoring programs, and educational experiences that expand opportunities for undergraduate pre-health students to cultivate the virtues and practical wisdom needed for the practice of medicine.

Teaching & Mentorship

At the Trent Center, mentorship is about more than helping students prepare for the MCAT, build a résumé, or gain admission to medical school. We invite students to consider a deeper question: What kind of person—and what kind of healer—do I hope to become? Through meaningful relationships with faculty and clinicians, students are encouraged to cultivate the character qualities essential to good medicine, including humility, courage, compassion, and practical wisdom. Our aim is not simply to help students succeed in entering the health professions, but to prepare them to care well for patients and serve the common good.
