Matthew Elmore, ThD, supports ethical oversight and institutional learning around AI in healthcare, contributing to research, writing, training, and consultation across the university and health system. Before the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) became a nonprofit, he played a formative role in shaping its early direction. He also leads community engagement initiatives that bring patient and public voices into conversations about health AI.
Dr. Elmore joined the team after completing his doctorate in ethics at Duke Divinity School, where his research examined Western ideas of free will and the ethics of informed consent. Trained as an EMT, he began his career caring for patients in the emergency department and burn unit of his hometown hospital in Michigan. He later worked in clinical research, partnering with a cardiologist on robotic innovations for heart procedures. With academic roots in the humanities, he brings a commitment to helping people and institutions strengthen moral awareness amid the demands of highly technical environments.
