One of the most popular medical history activities at Duke School of Medicine lies outside the formal curriculum. The Trent Center sponsors a History of Medicine Interest Group for first-year medical students that meets monthly over the course of the year. Students choose the topics, which change every year. We have considered all kinds of subjects ranging from the rise of pharmaceutical industry and psychotropic drugs, to “bad ideas” that went viral, vaccine controversies, and the global history of diseases such as smallpox and cholera. The Trent Center also brings in outside speakers on the history of medicine. For more information: trent-center@duke.edu
