Harvey Jay Cohen, MD led the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development for 37 years. He was also the founding principal investigator of the NIA funded Claude Pepper Older Americans Independence Center at Duke, which he led for over 25 years, and the founding director of the Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center, which he led for 25 years at the Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center.  Over the years, Dr. Cohen has had an abiding interest in medical ethics and humanities, and early on conducted a medical student-oriented seminar series on ethical issues in medicine. He has also encouraged and participated in programs oriented around compassionate care for seriously ill patients. He has been particularly interested in issues involving end of life care and its impact on patients, family caregivers and medical caregivers, and has tried to incorporate discussion of these issues in his clinical teaching activities and on rounds with residents and students.
