My original interest in medical ethics arose from studying accounts of early physicians and their attendant responsibilities. As an undergraduate studying medical history, I became intrigued by the sacred duty early physicians upheld as they provided care. As a fourth-year general surgery resident at Duke, I have assumed many of those duties in a setting where deep questions—those pertaining to meaning, suffering, and beauty—abound. I am interested in not only who we are to patients, but also who we are becoming as we work in this morally rich environment. I plan to study the features of our profession that allow us to pursue the good, while flourishing amid the pains and triumphs we all face as providers.
