Dr. Sharla Rent is a neonatologist within the Duke Department of Pediatrics and holds a secondary appointment at the Duke Global Health Institute. She is interested in studying the intersection of culture and ethics as it pertains to perinatal management in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Dr. Rent has been engaged in global health work for over a decade and has active research partnerships in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Her work focuses on perinatal palliative care, maternal mental health, and neonatal resuscitation. Her interest in perinatal ethics has overlapped with her global work through several studies, including an exploration of provider decision making at the margin of neonatal viability in LMICs. Dr. Rent hopes to further develop her expertise and training in clinical ethics in order to care for patients and families at Duke, as well as support clinical care and research at her global partner sites.
