Podcast Launch: a Q&A session with hosts Drs. Damon Tweedy and Jeff Baker, moderated by producer Beverley Abel - UNHEALED: A Story of Race, Memory and a Teaching Hospital - Tues, Feb 11, 12-1pm, 2050 Trent Semans Center

Please join us on February 11th for the launch of the podcast UNHEALED: A Story of Race, Memory, and a Teaching Hospital.  Co-hosts of the podcast Dr. Damon Tweedy and Dr. Jeffrey Baker will join producer Beverley Abel to talk about the making of seven-episode podcast. It retells the forgotten story of how a 24-year-old Army veteran named Maltheus Avery died following a car accident in December 1950 after he was turned away from Duke Hospital because of the segregation policies that existed throughout the south then.

The podcast features commentary from its co-hosts, along with interviews with scholars, community members, and Avery’s family. It explores how people who considered themselves progressive for their time were unable to live up to their own ideals, while highlighting those who fought to change the status quo.
