Acknowledgements

This project has been made possible thanks to the contributions of many individuals, but none more important than members of the family of Maltheus Avery. We wish to thank in particular Vida Avery, Sibyl Avery Jackson, and Malthaus Avery Blake McDowell.

The Avery family’s story came to our attention thanks to historian Spencie Love (1949-2020), as told in the final chapter of her outstanding book, One Blood: The Death and Resurrection of Charles R. Drew (UNC Press, 1996). We thank her former husband Garrett Epps and their children, Dan and Maggie, for their help and insights.

The UNHEALED team wishes to acknowledge generous support from The Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation Fund and the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation.  Neither played any role in shaping content. We also thank Duke University’s Institutional History Project and its School of Medicine for supporting this project.

Viewpoints expressed are those of the speakers and do not represent positions of Duke University unless stated explicitly otherwise.
